What a Weekend!

This past weekend I spoke at the Teenage Christian Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I got to share the stage with some amazing presenters: Jeff Walling, comedian Thor Ramsey, spoken word guru Jason Tomlison, and worship leader Chet McDoniel. Twelve people were baptized into Christ!

My part went well, but following a nationally-known preacher like Walling and a comedian named Thor was a very intimidating task. I love being able to speak to teens and keep a toe in the waters of youth ministry. Their energy and passion for life is extremely contagious.

Getting home was an adventure. Due to bad weather in Houston, I didn't get home until a day later than I was supposed to. Luckily, I used to live in Houston, so a friend of mine let me crash at his house for a night. I was so glad to finally get home.

Here's some things I learned this weekend:

1. I love my congregation. No matter what anybody tells you, the grass is not always greener on the other side and every church is just as messed up as you think yours is. Every time I travel and speak at other churches, I always come back with a greater appreciation for the people at Alameda, our elders, and the incredible staff that I am privileged to work with. We at Alameda are not perfect, but neither is anyone else. At Alameda, we are friendly, genuine, and passionate about the Kingdom of God. I am so blessed to be Alameda's preacher.

2. I love my life. This weekend I was asked if I would be willing to leave my congregation to preach at another one. That is the third church this year who has tried to get me to talk with them about a job. I love being able to say "no" and not think twice about it. I love where I live, I love being close to my family, I love my friends and coworkers, and I especially love the church I serve. I don't want to be anywhere else. What a blessing to say that and mean it.

3. I love the church of Jesus Christ. Whenever I am with young people I feel good about the future of the church. Teens today deal with alot of heavy issues, but they are truly interested in the gospel of Christ. They want to serve others and make a difference in people's lives. They want to love God passionately and authentically. We adults need to help them. We need to get involved in their lives because they will help us grow as much as we help them.

4. I love to preach the gospel. Teaching people about Jesus Christ is what I want to do for the rest of my life.
