Short Cuts

Every morning I peruse various news websites to see what's going on in the world and to look for sermon illustrations. One headline and synopsis said this: "Speed diet: Women using ADD drugs to get thin - A growing number of women in Hollywood are abusing the ADD drug Adderall in their quest to be thin. But along with the rapid weight loss, they may be gaining a dangerous addiction."

It's amazing to me how many dangerous shortcuts people will take to look "good" in a bathing suit. But we take shortcuts all the time - including in our relationship with Christ. We think if we just read this one book, go to that one seminar/class, or follow a magical three step plan we will instantly be spiritually mature and Christlike in our character. But it doesn't work that way. The way of Christ does not include shortcuts. Each day we must make the decision that today we will take one more step towards Christ. That sounds easy but it's hard and it requires endurance, patience, and perseverance.

"By your endurance you will gain your souls." - Luke 21:19
