New Year's Resolutions

I am a goal-setter and a list-maker, so I like New Year's resolutions. Last year, Mitzi and I determined to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle. We accomplished our goal and this year we are adding to it by focusing on strength training. We've decided to focus on our health because we have noticed that being healthy physically has a positive impact on every other area of our lives, including spiritually.

Of course, I have other goals pertaining to church and my personal walk with God. I plan to share those with you in a few weeks when I spell out some exciting things that are in the works at Alameda.

So, what's your New Year's resolution?

Merry Christmas!

Matt Dowling and I are talking about how to do the book club idea on this blog. I'm excited about that opportunity, so stay tuned. Also, I would like to wish all of the readers of this blog a very merry Christmas. I hope you have a wonderful time with your loved ones. Let's also remember to pray for those who will be missing their loved ones this holiday season.

Books of 2007

I am an avid reader, so I have been catching up on my reading during this ice storm. It got me thinking about all the books I've read this year and some of my favorites. I mostly read "church stuff" so I won't bore you with my list, but what about you? What were your favorite books of 2007?

Powerful Words from God

Today I came across this wonderful passage from Jeremiah 9:23-24. May these powerful words from God bless you today:

"Thus says the Lord: Do not let the wise boast in their wisdom, do not let the mighty boast in their might, do not let the wealthy boast in their wealth; but let those who boast boast in this, that they understand and know me, that I am the Lord; I act with steadfast love, justice and righteousness in the earth, for in these things I delight, says the Lord."

Slow Fade

I have been listening to the band "Casting Crowns", thanks to the recommendation of some of my friends from church. The words of the song "Slow Fade" haunt me and remind me that falling away from God is most often a gradual process. Here are the lyrics:

"Be careful little eyes what you see - It's the second glance that ties your hands as darkness pulls the strings
Be careful little feet where you go - For it's the little feet behind you that are sure to follow

It's a slow fade when you give yourself away
It's a slow fade when black and white have turned to gray
Thoughts invade, choices are made, a price will be paid
When you give yourself away
People never crumble in a day
It's a slow fade, it's a slow fade

Be careful little ears what you hear - When flattery leads to compromise, the end is always near
Be careful little lips what you say - For empty words and promises lead broken hearts astray

The journey from your mind to your hands is shorter than you're thinking
Be careful if you think you stand - You just might be sinking"
